The first click

In the creative journey of producing a music video, artists are often faced with decisions that could pivot the direction of their personal narrative and public image. I found myself at such a crossroads, having to choose between two potent tracks: "Has To Be" by CapzLock and "Heaven and Back" by Chase Atlantic. Each song, compelling in its own right, presented a canvas for storytelling through visual media.  "Has To Be" stood out with its gripping lyrics and a soundscape that I felt resonated deeply with my personal and artistic journey. There was a rawness to it, a visceral pull that seemed to echo my own experiences and emotional landscapes. The song's exploration of internal conflicts, fractured identities, and the journey towards resolution aligned with the messages I wanted to convey through my art. In contrast, "Heaven and Back" by Chase Atlantic, while evocative and rich in its musicality, struck a different chord. It presented a narrative that, although compelling, didn’t resonate as intimately with my current state of self-reflection and the story I wished to narrate, and, lets face it, being a no budget rushed music video, I didn’t think I’d be able to pull off the complex narrative story id built in my head, and I couldn’t do the injustice of submitting an average video (My perfectionist ocd would NEVER let me-). Choosing "Has To Be" was a decision motivated by the need for authentic self-expression. As an artist, the ability to embody the emotions of the song and to translate them visually was paramount. I felt that "Has To Be" offered me the space to showcase not just my software, camera handling and performative abilities, but also my interpretive skills to convey the layered meanings within the song. It provided an opportunity to not just perform, but to imbue every frame with a genuine piece of my essence. Moreover, the decision was underpinned by a desire to utilize my art as a means for a more significant conversation—one that touches on the nuances of personal struggles that are often left unspoken. "Has To Be" presented a thematic complexity that could stimulate dialogue on topics that I am passionate about, ranging from mental health to the resolution of inner turmoil. Being in the music video for "Has To Be," I envisaged a direct channel through which I could project the intensity of the song’s emotions, and by extension, my own. The creative direction this track offered aligned seamlessly with the visual storytelling I envisioned—where every note, every lyric, and every beat was an opportunity to unravel a part of the story. Ultimately, the choice was not just about which song was better but about which song allowed for a true representation of my artistic identity at this moment. It was about taking the song that spoke to my spirit and weaving a narrative that could touch the hearts of viewers, making them feel seen and heard in their own battles. The choice of "Has To Be" was a choice to embrace vulnerability, to craft a music video that was not only a performance but an experience—a mirror reflecting the complexities of the human condition.

Determining the target audience and demographic for a music artist involves understanding who the music resonates with most deeply, considering factors such as musical style, lyrical themes, and the artist’s personal brand. For an artist like CapzLock, whose music delves into personal struggles and societal critiques through a fusion of genres, the target audience would likely be as follows according my research:

Core Demographic

Age Group:

- Primarily young adults aged 16-25 who are active on social media and streaming platforms.

- Teenagers who are drawn to the raw emotion and authenticity in the music, and especially muslim and hijabi women, whose stereotype I aim to break.

Gender:

- Likely to be inclusive of all genders, with particular resonance among those who appreciate introspective and emotive lyrical content.

Psychographics:

- Individuals with a keen interest in mental health, personal development, and self-expression.

- Fans of storytelling in music, who seek deeper narratives and conceptual artistry.

- Listeners with eclectic music tastes who appreciate genre-blending sounds.

Secondary Demographic

- Older adults, 25-35, who have an appreciation for the nostalgic elements and mature themes within the music.

- A diverse, global audience due to the universal themes of human experience in the songs.

- Individuals from urban settings where there’s a higher consumption of diverse music genres and a greater acceptance of cross-genre experimentation.

- Creatives and those with artistic inclinations who find a voice in the non-traditional aspects of the music and the artist's persona.

- Digital natives and tech-savvy individuals who engage with music primarily through online platforms.

- Socially conscious individuals who value diversity, inclusivity, and artists who challenge norms and stereotypes.

Brand Affinity

- Fans who follow indie and alternative scenes, with a predisposition to support emerging artists outside the mainstream.

In detail, the target audience for CapzLock would be a diverse, young, and culturally engaged demographic that values emotional depth, narrative richness, and artistic integrity. This audience seeks authenticity and connection both in their music and in the communities they form around their musical preferences. They are not just passive listeners but active participants in the culture surrounding the music. As such, marketing and engagement strategies would be tailored to foster this sense of community and shared experience among the audience.

Scripting a music video is akin to crafting a short film. The script serves as the blueprint for the narrative arc, visual elements, and thematic messages you want to convey through the music video. During the scripting process, I delved deep into the lyrics and mood of the song to ensure that every scene, transition, and visual metaphor would resonate with the viewer and faithfully express the essence of the track. My aim with the music video for "Has To Be" was to explore and visualize the internal conflicts and emotional turbulence that come with personal battles like trauma and duality of self. I sought to represent not just the struggle and chaos but also the journey towards healing and acceptance. Through this visual medium, I hoped to convey a message of resilience and the possibility of harmony within oneself. The portrayal of split personalities and the raw emotion of unresolved trauma required a nuanced approach to scripting. I intended for each frame to serve as a window into the character's soul, peeling back layers of defense to reveal vulnerability and truth. The narrative progression was carefully structured to ebb and flow with the intensity of the song, ensuring that the storytelling was dynamic and evocative.

The music video's main styles would be:

1. Visual Symbolism:

The use of potent symbols to represent abstract concepts such as glitching, stark intercutting, contrasting light and shadow to depict the battle between personal demons and the self that seeks the light.

2. Surrealist Imagery:

Drawing inspiration from surrealism to bend reality, creating dream-like sequences that seem unrealistic, that allow for a more profound exploration of the psyche and the surreal nature of processing trauma.

3. Narrative Intensity:

A narrative that builds in emotional intensity, mirroring the crescendos of the music and the evolving understanding of the protagonist. The storyline would be non-linear, circuler, reflecting the disjointed nature of memories, past and present selves and unexplainable emotions.

4. Cinematic Choreography:

Movement would be a narrative device, with choreography that expresses the turmoil and catharsis experienced by the protagonist. Abstract movement with low shutter speed would be integral, conveying what words and lyrics cannot.

5. Direct Address:

Breaking the fourth wall at pivotal moments to create a direct connection with the viewer, inviting them into the emotional landscape and fostering a deeper level of empathy and understanding.

6. Illustration:

The illustrations were planned to be weaved throughout the video, providing an abstract visual language that complements the lyrical content. My vision was to use animated sequences that emerge from the live-action footage, blurring the lines between reality and the psychological landscapes of the protagonist. These illustrations, hand-drawn or digitally created, were to be used in several ways. These illustrations could manifest as animated thoughts or memories that interact with the physical environment, symbolizing the internal wars and unresolved trauma or serve as transitions between scenes, depicting the protagonist’s journey through different emotional and psychological states. For instance, during moments of introspection in the song, the screen could fill with water-like animations that reflect the fluidity and uncertainty of thoughts and emotions.

7. Otherworldly Makeup:

To visually represent the concept of fragmented realities and the raw intensity of emotions like female rage, the makeup was scripted to be bold and transformative, very 'girlhood-esque', pushing beyond the boundaries of everyday aesthetics. The makeup would use striking designs that complement the mood of each scene and incorporate elements of fantasy makeup to create an alien outlook. Makeup designs were to include symbolic elements such as cracks or glowing lines, representing the scars of past traumas and the glimmers of emerging strength. The use of progressive makeup changes was planned to depict the protagonist's transformation and to visualize internal conflict and resolution.

8. Nostalgia Factor:

Incorporating elements of nostalgia, such as an old telephone, was a deliberate choice to evoke a sense of timelessness and to connect with the audience on a deeper emotional level. These elements were intended to symbolize connection and disconnection; The old telephone, for instance, would symbolize attempts at communication with the past or parts of the self that seem distant. I also wanted to evoke a sense of familiarity as nostalgic elements stir memories and feelings, making the video more relatable and emotionally potent. The nostalgic items would not be mere props; they were scripted to be active elements in the storyline—rings that go unanswered or conversations with versions of the self that are stuck in a bygone era. This would not only underline the theme of time's passage but also enhance the protagonist's emotional narrative.

By intertwining these styles, I envisioned a music video that would not only tell a story but also invite viewers to feel and reflect deeply. The goal was to create a piece that was visually arresting, emotionally stirring, and ultimately healing. The journey of scripting this video was as much about personal expression as it was about connecting with others through shared human experiences. Through these creative choices, the music video for "Has To Be" was envisioned to be a journey through the complex inner worlds of an individual, portraying a raw and moving story of personal struggle, growth, and identity. These elements, each with its own emotional weight, were chosen to create a music video that was not just seen but felt, leaving a lasting impression on its viewers.

A mood board is a visual collage that designers and creative teams use to represent the aesthetic direction and emotional essence of a project. It's an assemblage of images, textures, colors, and sometimes text or other materials, gathered to evoke or project a particular style or concept. Mood boards serve as a tangible reference point that helps ensure consistency and clarity of vision throughout the creative process.

Importance of Mood Boards

Communication: Mood boards are a communication tool that conveys ideas that are hard to articulate with words alone. They allow creative teams to visually present concepts and ensure everyone has a unified understanding of the project's direction.

Inspiration: They act as a source of inspiration, sparking creativity and providing a wellspring of ideas for the team to draw upon as they progress with the project.

Reference: Throughout the lifecycle of a project, mood boards serve as a constant reference to keep the work aligned with the initial vision.

Decision-Making: They assist in decision-making by providing a framework against which options can be evaluated for consistency with the project's style and goals.

Cyber Theme Mood Board for Music Video

For my music video with a cyber theme, the mood board is crafted to encapsulate a futuristic and digital atmosphere. This concept is not only about technology but also the interaction between humans and the digital world.

Visual Elements:

- Color Palette: Neon blues, purples, and greens against darker backgrounds to capture the vibrant yet shadowy ambiance of a cyberpunk aesthetic.

- Imagery: High-contrast photographs of cityscapes at night, circuitry, holographic displays, and cybernetic enhancements to invoke a high-tech future.

- Textures: Metallic surfaces, wire mesh patterns, and reflective materials that give a sense of sleek, advanced technology.

Stylistic References:

- Fashion: Outfits and accessories that blend urban streetwear with tech-inspired details, such as LED-lit clothing or augmented reality glasses.

- Icons and Graphics: Glitch art, binary code streams, and user interface elements like custom cursors or window frames that suggest interaction with software and virtual environments.

Emotional Tone:

- Atmosphere: A balance between the alienation of a digital dystopia and the allure of a world transformed by technology.

- Dynamics: The tension between motion and stillness, noise and silence, reflecting the dichotomy of a hyperconnected lifestyle.

Storyboard Links:

- Scenes that include elements from the mood board, such as a protagonist navigating a neon-lit metropolis, interacting with virtual interfaces, or experiencing moments of solitude amidst the digital buzz.

Plan for Mood Board Integration

Pre-Production:

- Collaborate with artists and designers to create custom visuals and props that align with the mood board.

- Work with fashion designers to develop wardrobe that reflects the cyber theme.

- Select locations and set designs that echo the visual style outlined in the mood board.

Production:

- Direct lighting and camera work to capture the neon-drenched aesthetic and contrasting shadows essential to the cyber theme.

- Choreograph scenes and character interactions that reflect the dynamic, interconnected world depicted in the mood board.

Post-Production:

- Apply visual effects that enhance the cyber theme, such as digital distortions or holographic elements.

- Color grade the footage to match the mood board's color palette, ensuring the final video evokes the intended atmosphere.

The mood board is a pivotal tool in bringing the cyber-themed vision to life for the music video. It ensures that from conceptualization to final cut, every creative decision made enriches the narrative and aligns with the envisioned cybernetic world.
